    Case Study 3

    Teachers and programme coordinators from Italy, Spain and Sweden share their acquired experience and insights in building together cross-curricular programmes of study intended for exchange students. 

    Target audience:

    Reflective Exercise:

    Having watched Case Study 3 Video discuss and reflect with colleagues the lessons learned from the shared experience of the DEEDS pilot implementations. In doing so document the various attributes and characteristics of your curricula and teaching practices through the lens of the following themes.

    The need of devising programmes of study for exchange students:
    • Generating a common understanding among colleagues surrounding the nature of collaboration required in developing a common programme of study alongside a partner school.
    • Identifying and acquiring a shared understanding on the need, value and importance in doing so?
    • Identifying what makes the development of a common programme a particularly demanding and complex task taking in consideration your own school realities?
    • Who are the individuals to be involved in the process and the why is it important to engage them.
    • Document the parameters one has to take into consideration – (educational system, age group, duration of mobility, curricular differences etc.).
    Mapping your own educational system:
    • overall structure and organization,
    • secondary school curricula- subject vs topic based approach,
    • degree of curricular versatility in terms of options and direction of study for students,
    • promoted student/teacher relationships – modes of interaction, promoted peer-to-peer student interactions.
    • dominant teaching methods, approaches and educational mindset,
    • existing mechanisms of student support – their strengths and limitations.
    Comparative analysis between your educational system mapping and the one of your partner school
    • Differences and similarities between the overall structure and organization of the two educational systems,
    • Aspects of convergence in the curricular versatility in terms of options and direction of study for students, between the two educational systems.
    • Differences and similarities between the promoted student/teacher relationships – modes of interaction, promoted peer to peer student interactions.
    • Comparative analysis between the dominant teaching methods, approaches, educational mindset of the two systems of education.
    • Comparing the existing mechanisms of student support – their strengths and limitations.
    Proposed methodology for bridging the gaps of interstate curricula
    • Generating a shared understanding of the DEEDS proposed method of devising common programmes of study,
    • Ways to establish an effective collaboration between teachers and other involved actors in devising shared programmes of study.
    • Administrative and logistical requirements pertaining such a task securing the effective collaboration of the two schools.
    Testimonies of teachers of their personal experience of devising programmes of study for exchange students:
    • Mapping the technical and analytical skills and competences required for the development of common programmes of study.
    • Identifying whether teachers are adequately equipped with those – documenting further needs of skill and know-how development.
    • Prospective limitations and anticipated challenges surrounding the process of development of shared programmes of study.
    • Proposed solutions and approaches of tackling with those challenges and limitations.
    • Expected time of development, required resources and information in doing so.
